Joseph, I was arguing that the ultimate goal of US policy during the cold war was to preserve nations from communism in order to preserve democracy -- even if we had to do so by using military governments in the short term. The counter argument was that the US had no interest in fighting communism for ideological reasons, but simply wanted to preserve access to economic resources or whatever.

I hope you understand my argument before you disagree with it.

BTW, since I have lived through most of the cold war, I don't have to consult history books to know what we were fighting for. America is a very idealistic country. We truly believed/believe we are fighting to preserve democracy in the world. We do not fight for land or empire or economic exclusion zones. We fight for democracy, pure and simple.

Now we have both Pat Buchannan and Novak against the war in Iraq. Why? Are these guys isolationists ala the Republican party prior to WWII?

I open the thread and posted without reading any post. I have now read all of the post. I agree with your statement. It had been stated many times though the years that we would hope that more democracy would show up around the world even thou some say we do not.

But I don't want the US to fight Iraq just for Israel. If we do go into Iraq, I want it for reason stated, i.e., WofMD etc.
Now if we could set up a pro-west government (democracy)? That would really be nice.
Afghan is going to take years and I mean years.

I'm against the War in Iraq and I'm sure as Hell not a isolationist! People can be against war in Iraq without being isolationist, Ned. Stop looking at the world in Black and White!

I'm still critical of it! I mean, we won and then what? Exactly what I predicted is happening. We won, and now we don't care. Afghanistan, within 10 years, is going to go back into civil war and all this will be for nought.
