Colonel Lon Nol led a faction of the military that was tired of seeing their country used as a staging area and supply depot for the NVA. The eastern third of the country was under the direct control of the NVA, while their allies the Khmer Rouge were building up in the north (again IIRC).
    Sikander, you're right. I did not remember that Sihanók had been overthrown. I do remember the Cambodian government switching sides and inviting us to attack the NVA in Cambodia.
