    Wraith:

Actually the artists me and Jimmy was talking about (Nas and Rakim) are VERY mainstream. On BET's list of top rappers, they made 5th and 4th respectively if I remember correctly. They are very well known, but the thing is... it's in the cities where they are mostly popular and they don't get too many fans in the suburbs (nas' one shortfall preventing him from having the highest sales in rap). Nas' video right now is the #1 video on MTV's rap countdown show. There's a lot of rappers who are very mainstream yet manage to work their mainstream-ness into creating messages.

So not all mainstream rap is garbage... only a portion of it pushed by Puff Daddy and Cash Money records is garbage... a lot of popular main-stream artists are still intelligent.

    thanks

Look, don't attempt to insult me just because I don't like a style of music. I'm not particularly into any kind of music. I don't spend a lot of time hunting down any style. Mainstream rap sucks rocks, and that's all there is to that. There probably are some decent indie artists out there, but I have more important things to do than go looking for them.
When I see suggestions of good artists, like in this thread, I do tend to check them out when I can, but it's never a top priority. And when people come off like you just did, I tend to conclude that they're just being pretentious, probably don't have any taste, and not bother at all. Rap is as much a fad with some crowds as Brittney Spears is with others, and I don't really give a damn about following fads.
Ok, then why don't you just say that instead of pretending to have an informed opinion? If you had said "I don't listen to much rap, so I can't really form an opinion on it" I would have completely respected it.

And on the other hand, if you had said "I've listened to tons of rap, all different sorts, and I just don't like it" I would have respected that too.

You see what I'm getting at? I won't judge electronica because I've hardly heard any of it. But you won't hear me saying it isn't music (the ultimate insult) just because I'm too lazy to bother substantiating it.

I take both into account. Good music sounds bad with terrible lyrics and vice versa.
To us, it is the BEAST.

            true that!!

I like a subtle yet catchy bass line....but I am a poet so lyrics are a definite must.
