  • South Dakota Poly Meet!

    Everyone:

I'll be waiting to see all my fellow 'Poly denizens at that Prairie Junction truck stop north of Sioux Falls on Interstate 29! C'mon on down! We can have a breakfast of sausage, pancakes and chocolate milk!

When's a good date for everyone to meet on the Great Plains in good old South Dakota?

    I've been through South Dakota.

It's flat, mostly, at least east of the Missouri River. The further north you go of Sioux Falls, the more obvious the former glacial terrain becomes. All lush and green now, but the moraines are obvious (and big, in many cases, forming valleys).

Where were you heading, Chegitz? The Black Hills?

We were coming back from Oregon. South Dakota was just in the way. I don't remember much except a glimpse of the badlands off to the south and lots and lots of wheat and soy.

              Chegitz:

I'd hope you would remember crossing that vast, mighty river known as the Missouri. In addition to wheat and soybean fields, we also have ... drum roll, please ... corn fields! And a nuclear bomber base!

Our biggest city is Sioux Falls: 120,000 people and counting!

It took me six hours to get from Brum to Bristol the other week (less than a two hour car ride).

Two of those were taken up getting from my friend's house to Birmingham New Street, since the local train broke down after one stop...

The other week I had to be in Birmingham for about 10.30am. The first train from York to Birmingham on a Sunday doesn't get in until about 2pm, so I had to go via Manchester... engineering works meant it took two hours just to get there... then another 2 hours to Birmingham, and then the local train wasn't running so I had to catch a "replacement bus service". Left York 7am, arrived University of Birmingham 11.45am. Bleh.
