  • The Sinkiang thread

Known to some in contemporary times as "Xinjiang". Sinkiang is a province in Southern China featuring some unique cuisine, such the famous Sinkiang roast mutton. Sinkiang is also having some troubles in recent times with muslim extremists, which has put it in the news as of late.
What is Apoly's thoughts on Sinkiang?

IIRC, it's one of two US-held territories in Asia at the beginning of A&A.

I think that Xinjiang is in the far north-west of China, in Central Asia, not in southern China.

And the muslim extremists are members of the Uighur people, who want independence from Beijing. Kind of like the Tibetans, only not a hip cause.

I only know it through Axis and Allies.

What can I say. China would never let a person like me into their country.

I would be too tempted to stir up other dissidents.

My understanding is that Xinjiang into WW2 was controlled by warlords before they were absorbed by the Nationalists and later Communists. I don't know anything else about the province.

It was brought into the Chinese empire during the Tang Dynasty, IIRC.

The desert scenes in "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" were filmed in XinJiang province. In the fim, whenever the characters refer to XinJiang, the subtitles translate it as "the west".

XinJiang food is outstanding, one of my favorite "Chinese" cuisines.

                  Xinjiang's cuisine is exotic!
                  Go for the mutton thing.

Also: major source of oil. Hence, no independence.

Xinjaing is a land of several non-chinese ethnic, predominatly Uighur, that is occupied brutally by the Chinese Communist scum. It is trying to supplan't the local ethnicity with Han immigrants. The horrifying occupation of it is an inidicator of the evil and soulless nature of the Chinese Communist regime.

Only a Chinese person would call XinJiang cuisine "exotic"

Although I entirely sympathize with the Uighers, calling the migration to XinJiang and (and that of Tibet) as an "occupation" betrays a very superficial understanding of the situation. Would you calssify the 1849 Gold Rush to San Francisco an "occupation"?

Xinjaing also produces some of the best grapes and melons in the world. You have to go there to test them though, they are awesome.

Yes, the melons. Very good melons.

Other than that, Xinjiang evokes images of desert, more desert, mosques, melons, grapes, mutton, more desert, oil, and nuclear test sites.

btw: Xinjiang is in Northwestern China, not southern.
