Vice City, Civ PTW, and Age of Mythology are all good picks.
I'll agree with Asher that Warcraft III was rather disappointing.

Avoid BF1942. It is historically inaccurate, and the gameplay isn't that great.

Go with Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and get the addon pack for it too. It is the best damn WWII FPS ever to exist. (Avoid the Gamecube version, it sucks. My brother was playing it... the PC version was stellar)

I agree with Fez on both counts (!!!)
BF1942 isn't that good, and Medal of Honor is a pretty good FPS game. Definitely one of my top two or three FPS series of all time. I have the PS2 version, Frontline, which is quite a bit of fun.

Damn it. Well I have this nick because I sound like Fez, and look like Fez. That is what this forum and my entire high school thinks.

You will make no mistake buying it either. The weapons really kick butt. I like the BAR rifle in the first version, and later the Sten Mark in the Addon, Spearhead. I would really love to see a new add-on take the series to the pacific. Now that would be fun.

From what I remember the first one goes Algeria first. Then Norway. Then Normandy and finally into this last part which is a forest in Germany I think. Each section includes several levels.

The expansion pack has three parts. First part is Normandy (with several levels), the second part is Bastogne (which has one extremely difficult part and several levels), then the final part is Berlin which is moderately difficult. Berlin is very interesting though.

BF1942 is ok, well maybe abit more than Ok!

AOM I purchased this date, after playing Demo for like 6 straight hours yesterday!

AOM is really good and looking briefly at Editor, should be good for those of us whom like scenario making!

It is neat and will take a bit getting used to, after been thouroughly hooked on AOE2:The Conquerors!

Those are two games I bought, plus PTW, which I was duped with limited "Bang-4-Your-Buck"..more like a "small" addon rather than an expensive Expansion Pack!

Oh well, win some lose some more!

Civ3 was my favorite game until Age of Mythology came along.

The game is completely awesome. The only flaw is the $@#^ population limit, which I've been preaching about for a long time.

First there's no reason. They say it's so the games don't have so many units to make them laggy.

Then WTF won't they let us choose? I have a high performance computer, and I love big battles. My comp can handle it. And the pop limit takes away from game play.

How many crimes, wars, murders, how many miseries and horrors might the human race had been spared by the one who, upon pulling up the stakes or filling in the ditch, had shouted to his fellow men: 'Beware of listening to this imposter; you are lost if you forget the fruits of the earth belong to all and that the earth belongs to no one." - Jean-Jacques Rousseau

I just got PtW and Medieval Total War, and I'd recommand these 2 games. However, I am less involved with Medieval than I was with Shogun : you lose the distinct Japanese feeling to get a more well-known European one, and it hurts the game's greatness a bit.
However, it keeps the fantastic qualities of Total War : deep gameplay, extreme realism. Since it takes place on all Europe, there is also much more variety than in Shogun, and the strategy part is much deeper (more kinds of emissaries, extremely big role of religion, commerce, dead factions reviving etc.)

PtW is pretty solid, especially now that the 1.14f patch made it playable in MP. Gotta love the Koreans (ok, their trait combination sucks, as their UU, but don't you want to play a vampire ovelord managing cities named 'Ulsan' and such ? )
The editor has been slightly enhanced, and you can create interesting mods with the new graphics (unit sets + kings and princesses). Scenarios still aren't ready (no scripted events) The AI is also slightly better than before. I overall think PtW is more than worth its 30$
