Personally I find all this discipline stuff quite offputting but it does organize you beyond any notion ever thinkable to you in the past.

(please note military service is mandatory in Greece. So if you can't avoid it, enjoy it)

CompSci. Have you gone for any bioinformatics-type jobs? I'd have thought there was quite a demand for computer-literate biologists?

The physical regime, commanders barking orders at you. As well as the philosophical concerns and the conditions. Don't be bleeding ridiculous...

What would the civil service entail? Don't they have a horribly arduous admissions system too? Getting through selection is one of my major achilles heels.

IW, are you a bio-informatics student? I still don't get your scientific field, guys. what will you do?

civil service = strict entry requirements and i hear it's very much an 'old boys network' type of affair. still you're an oxbridge grad so that can't hurt.

seriously given everything you've said the army, navy or airforce sounds good for you (well aside from your ideological objections, but that's your own fault ). i'm sure you'd get fast tracked for officer training with a degree. it's a good solid career, you can get out and see the world, and you've said many times that there's nothing keeping you in hull.

as for your other objections, a little hard work and discipline never did anyone any harm

I can work hard, that isn't the problem. The problem is convincing other people that I can do the job!

The guy who ratted on MI5 was science graduate.

Yes join the civil service - it has one big advantage - those pay cheques just keep rolling in

Also they pipe tranquilisers through the air con

The admissions system depends on the grade you apply for - senior CS involves an awful lot of work middle service involves less and support grades even less. Somehow I think you can probably do a little better then a filing clerk

If you don't like writing there is actually plenty of work that involves dealing with the public (passport control for example) rather than lots of form filling (although we have enough of that).

PM me if you want more detail.
