I went to public school until 8th grade, then I left for my safty (Let's just say I got into this fight with this guy, and a certain ethnic group was constantly giving death threats and a daily groan kick), so I had to goto a private school.

In terms of uniforms, it doesn't matter if a school has it or not. Both in public and private I've seen, kids are still kids and will stay that way. I wouldn't lose sleep over this.

If you want to get kids to behave, BRING BACK THE PADDLE!!! I'm all for that, at least I'm sure Ming is.

I had uniforms at school. It was Ok. I doubt the girls would have been wearing skirts otherwise.

          No, that would be wrong.

The other thing was that school regulations said that skirts had to be below knee length so of course all the girls felt they had to rebel against that rule and get their skirts as short as possible. YEAH!

yeah, my princible had a system. He got them on thier knees, and if their skirt didn't touch the ground... it's too short. Of course, he didn't do this just to check skirt length.

I never had to wear a school uniform so maybe that's why I'm not dead set against them. In fact I think they might even be a good idea.

Yup, our girls did the same thing. They would roll up the top of their skirts to make them shorter. My friend Kristen was assualted one day by the perveted chemistry teacher who said her skirt was too short and started to unroll it for her...

The headmaster would often walk up to the boys and check to see that our collars were buttoned and ties straight. He thought it was amusing and a way of bonding with us. We just made fun of him for being an anal-retentive weenie.

At the time (age 13-16) I thought they were good but as time has passed I've realised what a nasty, disciplarian, mind-destroying device they truly were, used to mark out students as less worthy and not complete individuals capable of actual thought. A heavy-handed way of forcefully depoliticising students and making them apathetic and uninterested in society.

I went to a public school in a civilized country, so no, I was not a sheep.

Personally, I see no point in school uniforms other than forcing people (or the schools) to pay for something that is completely unnecessary.

They stop kids getting bullied for coming from poor families and having sh1t clothes (if they do come from poor families they can get help to pay for the uniforms)

I think people exaggerate the benefits of uniforms, but the "harm" of them is exaggerated far more. They don't stifle individuality and turn people into mindless sheep. Clothing is a pretty minor way of expressing individuality, IMO, and there are plenty of ways in which kids are allowed to do so in school and out. I certainly wasn't stifled as an individual, and am today a very individualistic person.

Having been in both environments, I did prefer the private school. I don't know how much of the environment had to do with the uniform, but I don't mind. In the "real" world, dress codes and uniforms are used in the work place all the time. I see nothing bad about expecting the same thing of students, should a district decide to do so.
