Uhhh, MtG, I think Fez was just attacking Floyd in his first post, something other people on this thread had done, and then replying to the comments other people made at him. I do think the people attacking Floyd should note that DF did offer Che some money a while back....

At least according to economic theory, costs businesses incur from taxes are often passed on to consumers and employees.

A little resentment there about your chosen economic situtation?
Always.
Actually, at least around San Diego, those kind of **** jobs usually have about 20-30 applicants for every available position. I know a lot of people who are taking those **** jobs paying less than a quarter their previous earnings, so sounds to me more like you've got some "I's po, but I shovel **** for a living so I'm better than you lazy rich bastards" hangup.
What? The other day E-bay, which is right down the street from me, had a job fair. The traffic was so bad it took me a half-hour longer to get to work.
The issue is not the general existence of unemployment, it is the need for extensions on it. So, good for those who would take those jobs. And, yes, I am better than those lazy rich bastards that are whinning about not getting their unemployment extended. Yet, I am not jealous of their wealth.

If
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
Not that I approve of extending unemployment benefits at all, but I would have to say that the house proposal was hardly more than lip service, 5 weeks and ONLY in limited geographic areas with the highest unemployment rates. I would not judge the house bill as anything more than insincer political cover, when they should have just said 26 +13 weeks is all you are gonna get.

I've read that many businesses in the retail world are even cutting back on hiring seasonal help for Christmas, so even "temp" jobs aren't a guarantee nowadays.

I have six or seven weeks of benefits left. My mother's unemployed again as of yesterday, but at least she's not renting and won't go homeless (she's living with Grandma). My mother is a recruiter. If recruiters are being laid off, the economy is not getting better!
My dad is holding on by the skin of his teeth. If he misses a bank payment, he stands to lose everything, all four BKs and the house.

Fez also ran amok in DinoDoc's thread. He just thought this was threadjack day, instead of Friday. Unfortunately for Fez, he's acted up enough times to have made my special project list, so the chain I have him on is exceptionally short, and prone to be yanked back quickly.

Theory and fact, but we can get into a six degrees of separation type argument here about how you quantify indirect effects. In theory, the average caloric consumption of wheat in Burkina Faso affects me as a consumer, but the effect is trivial enough to ignore.
In the most generous case, a full time minimum wage employee costs around $13,000 a year, with payrol tax burdens but no other costs (bennies, costs associated with employment, or workers comp) A $320 annual bill (combined FUTA and SUI) added to that is semi-significant, but a $50,000 a year employee with a wages, benefit and burden cost of around $70,000 costs the same $320. That's just on the labor component of the business' costs. When you throw in all other direct and indirect costs, UI insurance becomes very trivial.
The net cost is less overall than the total amount taxed, because UI benefits get respent, typically in the sort of economic sectors (basic consumer products and services) that have a higher incremental cost of unemployment (lower paid workers, higher turnover, more labor intensive)
Winston - you're ok. Most of the rest of the forum is ok. (Or else I haven't gotten to know the newer miscreants. ) Fez is a "special project." He's already got one strike on his "three strikes and you're out for good" pass. If he had gone into one of his classic insult, whine, rant and flamefests, that would have been strike two and a four week ban. This is just a "who's your daddy" reminder.

That's irrelevant. Connecting to the internet is part of his job and necessary to find more work. Che's no more likely to cut it off than a farmer would sell his land.
