I suspect the 11% that can't find the United States are illiterate.

Our educational system, long dominated by the Democrat party and their union cronies, is a disaster.

Thank god we still have the brain drain working for us.

Only accurate if you have the right 1,000 people.

It only has to be a random sample, how hard can that be

Hard to say for sure. They had Roper (a well respected research company) do the study. But after reviewing the data, they don't provide any information on how the sample was selected beyond age and number of people.

Obviously, if they sampled only in the inner cities (poorer and less educated) you would see different results than if they sampled in the rich suburbs outside the cities where the education is better.

I think the better headline would be:

"Despite woeful geographic knowledge, U.S. still kicks European ass in economics, industry and technology..."

Wooo, that was exhausting...there's my macho jingoism for the year!

What motive do you suppose an organization like the National Geographic Soceity would have in wanting to funnel more resources into geographic awareness?

Good point, Sprayber, but on the other hand, National Geographic is a rather reputable source.

But this is the way its done. You may all be like "Pish-aww! Lies, all of it!" (Or you're probably nothing like that... )

But bare in mind that the people you associate yourselves with might be above par. I know that just being in college that the people I associate myself with have never in their lives been exposed to the level of ignorance and stupidity I grew up with in my old high school.
(I really dropped the shields with that one.. fire away, boys )

So I wouldn't be surprised that 11% of Americans couldn't spot the USA on a map. There are some remarkably ignorant people in this world... and in all likelihood, they couldn't spot it on a map because they've never SEEN a map of the world as a whole. I remember when I was little, I confused North America with America, and thought that the world map looked a little funky... what I thought was Maine was actually eastern Canada. Well, I figured out my mistake like three weeks ago, so I can understand why people have a problem.

While I don't doubt considerable levels of ignorance, I would be interested in seeing their sampling plan. (being in the business). It does seem a little high.

I guess, sime most of us here are gamesters that have played many different games that have many different MAPS, that our knowledge of geography would be considerably higher than the average. Which just makes stats like this sound slightly unbelievable. (except for the Euros that will believe anything negative published about the US, without question)

What I'm really stunned about are the bad results for UK and more importantly Mexicans - I think they're close about beating even the US.

                            Ouch...

Yeah, I would like to know how exactly they went about this...

I mean, if they took this poll in West Trenton, East Saint Louis, or South Central Los Angeles, I think its safe to say its fairly bias.
