Should BCS Be Replaced By Playoffs? -- Guynemer's Proposal

I am all for a playoff system. It would be much simpler if the top division wasn't so huge, or if it didn't contain widely varying teams (in terms of quality) in widely varying conferences (in terms of quality and size), and of course those independants. To deal with this perhaps we should consider borrowing an idea from Europe, where there are a number of leagues stratified by quality. The worst teams in each league each year get dropped down one level, while the best get promoted one level.
This would allow the NCAA to work with a more reasonable number of teams at each level of play. Another good thing to do would be to make the conferences equal in size, say perhaps 8 teams per conference. Then you could make a schedule that would do the following:
Every team plays the 7 other teams in it's conference every year.
Every team plays 2 teams (selected by the NCAA well ahead of time) from other conferences. The results are used to get a fairly accurate picture of how good the various conferences are, as well as how good each individual team is.
Every team gets to schedule one game against whomever they choose. This will allow all those rivalry games etc. that are so much fun every year.
With this sort of system, it would be simple to set up a short but fair playoff that would decide the matter without much controversy at all.
Of course this would also be bitterly opposed by so many people for so many reasons that it would never get off the ground. Regardless of that, College Football needs to quit deciding the issue in smoke filled rooms, and come up with a system that lets the matter get settled on the field for all to see. He's got the Midas touch.
But he touched it too much!

Except the roster changes so dramatically within college sports it would be innappropriate to assume one years team is going to be the same as the next years team.
I don't think that Baylor or Kansas are going to magically be quality teams next year. We're talking about relegating the very worst teams here, not teams that are a season or two away from fielding a quality squad.
And if you get relegated, you can still improve your team and get back to the top level. It isn't a static system.KH FOR OWNER!

Exactly. Look at the turnaround of teams like Oklahoma, Texas, Miami, and (in the other way) Nebraska in the last few years.
Would it be fair to have them in a lower division in a year that they have the talent to win the National Championship?“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I don't want to do relegation on a yearly basis, however. I advocated doing it once every four years or something like that. The post is on this thread, but it's a hell of a long ways back. I also advocated relegation between major and minor conferences, not setting up a NCAA-wide league system like Sikander suggests.
And Nebraska will still be going to a bowl this year. I hardly think that they would be relegated under any system.KH FOR OWNER!

This upcoming weekend should be a good one for college football fans. Michigan has a good chance to take out Ohio State. If it does, then Ohio State is out of the BCS.
Pittsburg is a really good team. They put up an excellent fight against Notre Dame and beat Virginia Tech fair and square. Here's hoping they beat the convicts.
Washington could beat Washington State. Rivalries often end up in upsets and mediocre Washington State teams have often beat strong Washington teams...
Iowa's season is the only one that's on ice.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Here's hoping that every team above UGA loses all their upcoming games, while UGA goes 3-0. I'd like for my DAWGS to play the title game against Miami: BRING THEM ON!!!!!!!
You gotta root for your team.
[threadjack] Who do we want to see win the BCS? You know my vote. [/threadjack]
