If you bother to read the FRONTLINE article that I posted you would see that Saddam and Iraq was indeed an US client until Kuwait. That's when he blew it, before that... long time lovers

The US provided material support only in the late 80s, not through the Iran/Iraq war, in fact, we nearly wacked him over blowing a whole in a US frigate in 87.

We had begun a tentative accord which he assumed meant he was free to invade Kuwait, don't bother telling me about some article you posted, I kept well up on this for a LONG time.

Our government never supported the Taliban, although we did give them $43 million in 2001 to help in their anti-opium poppy campaign. At best the US can be said to have decided that the Taliban were the lessor of two evils. What the US did do, however, was spark and so=ponsor a civil war for almost a decade that cost over a million Afgani's their lives, created millions of refugees, and became a situation where people longed for the stability the Taliban created.

Chris, yes I do know what I wrote. I studied Iraq-US history pretty extensively last time around.

So you can look at this picture as having begun with this tour that Saddam took immediately before he invaded Iran. He was protecting his back with conservative regimes. With pro-West regimes. He was not protecting his back with the USSR. As a matter of fact the USSR cut off the flow of arms to Iraq once it invaded Iran. And Saddam had to rely exclusively on Western armament for three years until the USSR changed its mind and start selling him again. They saw that they were losing out in Iraq because the West was willing to give him everything he wanted.

That was the beginning of the war... no need to question Western involment here, as USSR did not want Iran/Iraq war.

even though as you can read CIA support for Saddam goes much further back in history than that. I mean that would be nothing new that they supported a non-communist at the time, it is only after Kuwait that the support was finally ended.
