And I had no idea comb cleaning was a 'gay' issue. I thought it was a 'use of time/resources' issue.

Yes of course....but remember being Gay and making the best use of time/resources go hand-in-hand.
Of course, some of us are "gayer" than other gays and some of us are more prone to better time/resource use than other gays...It's all a matter of extremes.
