  • I have to say: Why aren't people offended by W Bush threatening the world with nuclear weapons?

Is it ok because he's american?

      • Never, I said he's _threatening_ with nukes. According to Apolyton banners.

        • Markos, that banner is as tasteless as this one I just whipped up. Except mine uses a clever pun. But it's still incredibly tasteless.

          • ****, that's awful.

And those of you who think that The Great Dictator isn't still of comedic value need to have their heads examined. If someone killed my whole family, I'd want to be able to laugh at him...

                Hmmm. Didn't see that one.

However, we have a saying in my country. It is brought up at least once a year. It goes something like lest we forget.

It refers to our war dead. Most people probably toss it off and wouldn't think about it the other 364 days of the year. I don't toss it off.

I don't see anything funny, or acceptable in swastikas or any other depiction of Nazism that can be mistaken for support or in any way 'normalising' attitudes about them.

The film Chaplin made is a classic. Using an image from that film out of context and exposing it to people who know squat about where the image came from is not classic.

Most publishers are aware that they reach a wide audience and try to do so. Why Mark seems oblivious to that fact baffles me.

First of all the Canadians are acting like the formula would be Chaplin = Hitler. Apparently only me, aaglo, KX and Markos seem to understand the clue with The Dictator and Chaplin in general. I assume you also think that Modern Times was a hoax and just a cheap comedy. The difference seems to be that Canadians that have been taught to fear fascism like hell and the Dutch have their bad memories left because of the occupation by the Reich, very much dislike the banner and the movie, The Dictator. While the supporters have a different background and view to this issue. IMO The Dictator movie was a very strong expression about what Chaplin wanted to say about fascism. And it isn't really a matter of linking all the war dead with a simple banner and a movie. Don't you have any limits? BTW, those comrade remarks don't fit into this case at all, unless you're now trying to make your own parody.

Conclusion; I do like the banner as it's sarcastic, but as several Apolytoners have sworn an oath to get rid of the banner at any cost, I assume it's better not to use it as there would only be more flaming.

                  CS,

I think you should calm down. Your anti-nazism policies are now set quite high compared to the situation. And Chaplin actually tries to look like a shabby "Hitler" as he usual does in his movies.
Please, don't stereotypicalise.....I certainly was never taught to fear fascism. Although I disagree with the political system, as I am rather left, I don't fear it, at least not in the sense that it is evil. It just ruins humanity like capitalism, advocating greed and so forth.

As to the banner, I myself wouldn't mind it running. Frnakly, I like satire like MP, and also find making fun of a dictator somewhat amusing.

However, for practical reasons, I suggest not using it. Too many people would get offended.

It'd kind of be like making a movie about the sacred rock in Mecca really being an alien escape pod. Most WASPs wouldn't get offended, but that producer is soon to be hated by any and all Muslims. It just isn't a good idea.

                      • actually, on second thought, my example was a bad one.....I wouldn't really find that Mecca movie funny.......but I like making fun of evil leaders. Life is already crappy enough, why gripe about them too? Sure, believe that what they did was evil, but don't JUST associate the leader with their evil acts....what about their stupid acts?

What exactly is unclear to you?

What do you think you would gain by promoting Apolyton through the use of an image that requires specific knowledge on the part of the audience in order to not piss people off?

In what way do you think it would not be an incredibly bad idea to flog your merchandise using an image which can be mistaken for a poor illustration of Hitler?

What about this do you not understand?
