what opinion? the one based on the ignorance of the reference to the movie or of what the movie is about?
Ignorance isn't the issue, it's the immediate reaction of the viewer to the banner. You don't get the opportunity to educate them before they see it...
Maybe a better option would've been a banner competition...
"Love the earth and sun and animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown . . . reexamine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency" - Walt Whitman

Hmm.. i allways tought that there was something between genious and bad taste you know like between black and white is grey.
No, that is mainstream.
By the way, did you guys hear that Siemens was about to launch a range of gas ovens with the brand "Zyklon", but dumped the idea after protests from jews.
Interesting. 5 pages of responses yet only 25 votes.
MarkG, are you trying to test perceptions or increase sales?
There's a show-biz saying that goes, "Tragedy plus time equals comedy." I find it interesting that we can joke about Jim Jones/KoolAid and John Wayne Gacy, but light-hearted references to the Holocaust seem forever out of bounds.
As I stand firmly with freedom of expression, I would suggest that the subject banner is acceptable if the site owners think it is.

Very few of these culturally challenged posters have ever seen "The Great Dictator"; I have not seen a colorized version, but maybe that still was colorized separatly

defibtely run it. it's very funny! and i'd advice not to even put the warning that is not hitler. it's so obvious it's chaplin, but some people might not know it.
The banner isn't in a context of parody. It's in a context of advertising. Chaplin had a political agenda for that film. You don't.
i'm using chaplin's parody of nazism to make an analogous statement about today's advertising, while at the same time of course promoting our store
if in the past we had oppressive goverments telling people what to do, today we have the companies doing the same thing through mass media and advertising
I voted banana, because I don't see myself buying anything from the store, regardless of this, or any other, banner.

ps Speaking of Mel Brooks (several pages ago), every time I see History of the World, Part I I can't help but giggle (yes, giggle) uncontrolably at the end, during the "previews" of Part II, when they show "Hitler... on ice!" followed by "Jeeeeeeeewwwwwwsssss in Space!" Mel Brooks kills me.
