Mild Torture During Interrogations. That's O.K, Isn't It ?
Sometimes the anti-torture crowd gets way out of hand and starts labeling things as torture which have nothing to do with torture.
For instance the 80's the EU courts throw out the British practice of making IRA terror suspects stand while they are being questioned by police. The lefties said it was "psychological torture" to make suspects stand while the police get to sit.
Bear in mind that under the Prevention of Terrorism (Emergency Procedures) Act those interrogations could last 5 days. What's the longest you've ever stayed standing for?

Stand for how long? Questioning of suspects can take hours.
Police aren't allowed to shine bright lights in suspects faces anymore.
Sure making someone stand is not torture if it lasts few hours.. but if it lasts 'till you confess' or few days, I think it's a bit too much. Everybody is not guilty anyway.

I'm pondering whether or not this is sig material...
The only place where tortuing could be used in my opinion is as punishment (non life threatening tortuing here for small crimes (not too small, obviously) might be even better than a few days in jail or public works), but definitely not for interrogation. Tortuing would help nothing at interrogation. Strong morale people still wouldn't admit what they did even if tortued, while some weaker people would say "I did it" even if he didn't just because of tortue. Tortuing helps nothing. Remember inquisition, those people really admitted they were sent to this Earth by satan. Do you think it was really so?
For example I wouldn't admit certain things whatever would be done to me no matters wherether I did them or not (I would never admit for example a crime for which I could get many years in jail. I'd better choose death). WHile if tortuing would be applied for smaller crimes (for which there aren't big punishments), I would admit them no matters I did them or not (who likes to be tortued?).
I had a thread on the exact same subject a few months ago and the general consensus was that it wasn't OK.

Says someone who likely has never been really tortured. Most people think they could stand up to torture. Almost no one ever does. The real question is not whether you can stand up to torture, but for how long can you stand up until you crack?
The purpose of torture isn't to collect information. It's well known that the torture victim will say whatever he thinks his captors want to hear. The purpose of torture is break human beings, turn them into helpless little animals.
Torture is never acceptable, not even to save a life.

so what, is .bad some sort of new domain thing?
note to self--visit toture.bad sometime in the near future.
Nope. Not on a web site of any nature. In a magazine that I won't name, because this idea drifts some distance from the norm.

The author of the article used torture in the title, and the methods suggested left no doubt that it was indeed torture he was advocating.
The methods were somewhat along the lines Q Cubed mentioned.

Given the number of people who voted in favor of torture, I'm surprised that more people aren't vocally defending it. I blame this discrepancy on the lack of a "banana" option, which can skew an poll's results.
