  • It's official- Bush asks congress for declaration of war on Iraq

Sorry if this has already been posted, I tried to scour the boards as best I can for a similar topic. But in any event, Bush has now asked congress for approval to remove Sadaam Huseein from Iraq. I wonder what will happen if he doesn't get approval? Will congress even have the courage to try to defy Bush?

    So it begins....

We're actually going to declare war this time? Shocking. Good to see Bush follow the Constitution in this matter though.

I'm surprised CNN hasn't got this as breaking news.

BTW, he hasn't really asked yet. He just said he would do so at the appropiate time.

Nah, I think he'll get approval. At least something interesting from tv to watch.

Any speculation on the chances of congress actually opposing this?

well, at least he's starting to listen to common sense...

now, all he has to do is convince the public, and convince the allies.

that's one of the reasons why vietnam was so divisive-- the people who went didn't know why, nor did the people who stayed behind.

bush is finally starting to take that to heart.

I don't know what Bush is going to say to justify a war, but let me tell you that I have had nightmares about this guy, Saddam, ever since Rumsfeld told us how a small jar of anthrax could kill thousands and effectively disrupt and an entire American city for years. Such jars of anthrax can easily be hidden from weapons inspectors.

Saddam could really cause major damage to us, England and Israel.

He's not asking for a DoW. He's asking for something like the Gulf of Tonkin resolution or the Gulf War congressional thumbs up. Neither one is a DoW as defined by the constitution.

                            Rhetorical question. Congress will approve.

Yes congress will approve. But it will be more important as to how the American people respond. If the majority of people don't approve, I think Bush will have to think twice in an election year.
