Could someone please explain to me how it was a lapse in judgement to include the word niggardly in a vocabulary lesson for the benefit of the late comers to the conversation?

Okay, one point everyone is missing here.
This is a school. This is a government-run school. There's this little thing called the First Amendment.
Government schools have no business whatsoever telling their teachers which words they can and cannot use.

1. I do see no reason for the Teacher to apologize or be reprimanded/fired.
2. Questionable judgement using the word. I actually used the word when I was younger, but have since stopped using it. There are many other good words to use. Even though I said Questionable, I consider it a real minor minor lapse of Judgement.
And Finally, being offended by it's use is really silly. But there are a lot of stupid people in the world.

She has to stick to the curriculum, and that's for the government to decide.
Now you are being illogical. Teaching the kids 'niggardly' is consistant with the cirriculum, which is to teach vocabulary. There isn't a set rule of words that MUST be taught.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

I'm guessing that there will be from now on. We can't have children learning anything that might be offensive to anyone in any way...KH FOR OWNER!

Shakespeare invented words by the score. The word "Alligator" for one. It's a Shakespeare invention- for some reason he disliked the original "Legarto".The genesis of the "evil Finn" concept- Evil, evil Finland

This parent should be publicly made fun of and held up to be the ignorant, uneducated sod that she is. Words like Niggardly are exactly what children should be taught in school that way they won't act as foolishly as this woman did.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

My first point stands unimpeached. The government has every right to force a teacher in a public school to teach the curiculum. That means the school board says "teach this" and the teachers obey, that's their job. The teachers weren't elected by the people to decide these things.

Were you elected to the school board? How do you know what is and what is not consistent with the curiculum?
Because I know what is involved in ciriculum making (having a mother as a teacher leads you to know things). They do not proscribe specific vocabulary words, and if you think they do, you have seriously something wrong with you.
Your point is utter crap. School boards do not go through each and every word that students must be taught“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

--"Point out the illogicalness"
Butting in a bit, but your statement would have the logical conclusion of "Many parents do racism".
--"No I didn't. I insinuated that her motivation for using this word was stupidity."
Teaching vocabulary is now a stupid thing? Omoshiroi.
And no, it wasn't just him.
--"Its a government run school - that means the government creates the curriculum."
She's the English teacher, not the math teacher. Nothing wrong with her teaching vocabulary by that standard, na?
And, in case you missed it, First Amendment. Government can't say "don't teach these words to anyone". If they fire her for using niggardly, this is a Constitutional issue.
--"If you're tired of this "PC-crap" go up to Harlem and tell some folks on the street your joke."
Which is exactly how this sort of speech should be controlled.
To quote, somewhat out of context, a show I've been watching "Tell a bald man his head is usefull in the dark and you'll get punched in the face."
(Of course, the next line is "Santa says such cruel things", since they were talking about Rudolph, but the point fits.)
--"School boards do not go through each and every word that students must be taught"
The sad thing is that they don't do this for most textbooks, either...
