Does this mean I should have stopped feeding this way
Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind- bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space.

Extended breastfeeding (beyond the age of 3-4) used to be far more common than it is now. The reason for that is that it reduces the chances of conception.

As far as I know there are now laws against "Breast Feeding" (but some think there should be), nor are there any laws that I am aware of the place an age limit on Breast Feeding.
There should be no law against brest feeding in general. It's the most natural thing for babies. There should be a loose age limit (say 4) to stop nonsense like that one.

Dissident, as far as I know human nature, a woman gets some sort of reward for breast feeding - like the pleasure of sex is nature's reward for producing children. But in this case, what the woman gets or doesn't get is for me not so much a problem as what happens to the child.
Why doing it the easy way if it is possible to do it complicated?

but if the child isn't being forced to do it what's the problem?

Sure he may grow up to be a panty-waist, but I think it's our god-given right to grow up to be panty-waists if we want to . No one should force a kid to mature at a certain age etc.

Believe it or not I think its OK for this 8 year old to breast feed. We can't force this kid to grow up and act like a big kid.

But where I would draw the line is at puberty. But even then the picture is cloudy. If the woman isn't forcing the child to do it, what's the problem. Is it the goverment's job to stop incest? But of course you could make the case the woman is brain washing the boy and this is sexual abuse. And that the kid has no control over his actions. But that seems a little far fetched.

I hope that this happens automatically, then. There are things that simply don't work between parents and children when the latter enter puberty.

I hope it does too . You would think things would happen naturally and automatically long before the age of 8.

                In a word: Yes.

I diagree because I wasn't talking about intercourse here. Only if sexual abuse is present (ie mother taking advantage of boy) should the goverment intervene.

The drawback is that I would imagine the boy would suffer far greater trauma in being seized and put into care than he would by continuing breastfeeding. It's like trying to cure verruccas by sawing your foot off.

I just hope the foster home kids don't know what he's in for.

He's 8. It will be a miracle if he doesn't try something on a teacher or another girl.

Ah, this reminds me of a line in the great movie Bachelor Party, where Tom Hanks' friend is a photographer photographing a baby with his mum, who, shall we say, had fabulous funbags

He says to himself "Baby, if i were you, i'd breastfeed until i was 19!"

What this mother did is inexcusable... there is no excuse here.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)
