  • The Definition of Irony

Steve Buscemi says in ConAir, "You wanna know the defination of irony? It's a bunch of idiots jumping around on a plane to a band that died in a plane crash."

In Chicago there is an anarchist bookstore/hangout known as the A-Zone. They have a lending library, a communal kitchen, meeting place, etc. It turns out that they were a half-block from my last apartment in Chicago (I always wondered what all those hippies were doing in there ).

Last week the A-Zone was attacked by a rascist street gang (77th St something or other) which has ties to a white supremicist group (yes, Virginia, there are white street gangs).

Five members of this group gathered outside the A-Zone and began shouting anti-homosexaul slurs at the place. One person was inside the A-Zone and he immediately went outside and confronted these thugs (more guts than brains, I've seen these skinny little hippies ). They asked him if he was a ***, and he said gays were welcome and that he was an anarchist.

At this point, two members start busting the windows of the place, and the anarchist kid runs back inside. The other three thugs chase him and begin beating him up.

A passing police car sees this, and rescues the anarchist!!!! Three of the thugs were arrested.

I have to wonder, how does it feel to be an anarchist and be rescued by the police!

In complete disclosure I should point out that six years ago, the A-Zone was attacked by eight uniformed police officers who had removed their badges. They destroyed records, took computers, and pepper-sprayed all present and then left.

But still, the state rescues the anarchists!

Do you have any tales of ultimate irony?

    edit: fixing typos.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

I don't think that I could hope to top "anarchists rescued by the police"...

A song called "Ironic" (you know the one) that lists several situations refered to as being ironic, yet not one of them was an example of irony.

I watched a martial arts tournament in college where a 60 or 70-year-old guy simultaneously beat the crap out of three 30-year-old 10th degree black belts, but that's not particularly ironic, since the first rule of martial arts exhibitions is that "old men kick ass."

I spend all day at work being paid to blatantly violate copyright laws by photocopying inter-library loan books for professors and whatnot, then with my wrists all cramped up for illegally turning pages for hours I come home to an e-mail from the uni tech people telling me to stop violating copyright by using Bearshare...

sagacious, we've discussed that song amongs us, and someone suggested that the song not featuring a single reference to irony might actually be considered ironic... Takes a few extra steps of thinking

I wasn't so sure about that being the right word in there, either.
