I extend a standing invitation to all of our smoking posters to come visit me while I'm on my pulmonary rotation. That invitation also applies when I'm on my cardiology rotation, my heme/onc rotation...

Yes, it would be a good plan. If I was still doing the research I used to be doing on human pulmonary arteries I would invite them to take a good luck at a diseased, blackened lobe of lung. Not a pretty sight.

I have to say I have been to a hospital where people were mainly treated for cancer to the lungs. It didn't make me give up smoking

And I have also seen the blackened lungs on TV.

                    Nope, nothing still.

I successfully gave up smoking for several years - did it cold turkey too (which was hell).

That was after I was dating a palliative care nurse who worked in a hospice for people dying of various complaints, mainly cancer. Being a nurse she wasn't squeamish about giving me vivid descriptions of people dying of smoking related cancer of the mouth, tongue, throat and lungs. Some of it was too gruesome to repeat to your tender ears, like imagine having half your face amputated or your mouth removed entirely and being fed through the gaping wound.

She said lung cancer or emphysema was one of the worst deaths imaginable because you basically slowly suffocate or drown, you die gasping for breath like your slowly being choked. This can go on for weeks or months. You can't draw breath.

Look, I just don't anymore, okay?

But I think that can happen to you even if you don't smoke, simply because of old age. The arteries become more and more blocked and the end result is the same. Namely not enough oxygen.

I'm not 100% sure about this.

I don't smoke; never have, never will.

My Father, on the other hand, smokes all the time.

Venison, fish, poultry, even the occasional tomato.
