      Dal (I will NOT call ou Azazel ), it comes from German.

      Alexander was a popular name in Russia. Russia had close ties with Germany during the latter half of the 2nd millenia.

      Alexander --> Aleksander --> Aleksasha (endearing nickname) --> Alek Sasha --> Sasha

      Btw, Alexander is a kosher Jewish name.

      When Alexander the great conquered Judea, the Jews were so happy they called all newborns "Alexander" for that year.

            I have seen Elizabeth shortened to "Beth," "Tish," or even "Fish."

            I thought the short form for "Magaret" is "Maggie."

            And "Sasha" is Russian.

              the question is how did " Alexander " was shortened into "Sasha" in russian.

              I am not completely sure that siro is right, but it seems the most logical explanation.

                  No one calls me Tony. Some do call me Tone. Most call me Ant.

                  On one occasion I had my name abbreviated to "Oine" (sic), pronounced as in Antoine, but without the Ant bit. (this abbreviation given me by a fit French bird )

                      Robert -> Rob -> Bob.
