Yes of course guns are made to kill. They are used everyday to kill or threaten to kill people who are determined to kill you. When the idea of self defense is rdiculed then we are on the way to Orwell's new and better world. The fact is that weapons are used by law abiding citizens to defend themselves from law breakers who will NEVER turn in their guns. If someone can devise a way to rid criminals of guns then there would not be a problem.
The right to bear arms however has to do with the power that the US government has invested in the PEOPLE. If the guns are taken away that is an admission that the people are not trusted with power. In a prison only the guards have guns. Kind of makes you think doesn't it...
Guns don't overthrow tyrants. People overthrow tyrants.
"Spirit merges with matter to sanctify the universe. Matter transcends to return to spirit. The interchangeability of matter and spirit means the starlit magic of the outermost life of our universe becomes the soul-light magic of the innermost life of our self." - Dennis Kucinich, candidate for the U. S. presidency
"That’s the future of the Democratic Party: providing Republicans with a number of cute (but not that bright) comfort women." - Adam Yoshida, Canada's gift to the world
The difference between alcohol, cigarettes, cars, money and guns, is that GUNS ARE MADE TO KILL, while alcohol, cigarettes, cars and money are NOT.
Some would disagree on the cigarettes thing .
“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
- John 13:34-35 (NRSV)
If the hated English were threatning to take away their hard won freedoms i could understand keeping the constitutional bit about guns, but as the USA has the most powerful armed forces the world has ever seen i don't really see the point.
Unless the government is willing to impose martial law in my neighborhood, I don't expect the drug dealers and prostitutes to go away anytime soon. I think that's why I keep a shotgun around the house. Nothing like the sound of a bolt action to deter would-be scalawags.

"Perhaps a new spirit is rising among us. If it is, let us trace its movements and pray that our own inner being may be sensitive to its guidance, for we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness that seems so close around us." --MLK Jr.
In theory anyway the United States is supposed to have a government "by the people, of the people and for the people." If that is the case then who exactly is proposing to take the guns from the people? Are these people "more equal than others"? The issue is not guns it is power. My father who is far from a gun toting radical gave me a 22 rifle a month ago but he kept his hand gun. We discussed the issue and he said it was a matter of principle. He fought two wars to maintain the freedom we enjoy as individuals and not slaves or prisoners and he keeps a gun as a symbol of his rights as a joint owner and participant of this government.
Guns are not the answer but people are skeptical of a government that seeks to disarm them while "they" keep theirs. The "they" is supposed to be us.
The population must defend itself. People who say guns should be banned are stuck in their own illogical bottle of confusion and should open their damn eyes. I will probably own an 9MM when I am 25 or something because I want to protect myself. You pansy Socialists want to take that right away.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)
