Because the ocean isn't that deep. It would be slapped out of the way and then the ocean floor would be flung into the skies to come raining down on the rest of the planet. We're talking bolders the size of buildings almost reaching escape velocity and then coming back down.Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

The only possile solution would be to build dozens of nukes and send them directly at the thing to fragment it and destroy the larger chunks. With luck, we'll only get hit by the remains of a smaller chunk, rendering the worldwide extinction to a mere insanely MAD usage of nuclear weapons.*grumbles about work*

With the time scales we are talking you could deflect the asteroid by simply smashing a ten tonne satellite into it at 20 km/s. The impulse alone would give it enough to knock it off a collision course.
Of course you would need to know the exact trajectory, which may be a bit tricky given that its an n-body system. One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

I am going to enjoy my entire life and will live until 90 (well at least I hope). If an asteroid does come on collision, the US would probably have already built some nuclear device that could knock it way off. As Dolphin said even a satillite could do it. Imagine what a nuke would do?For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)
