I think the water isn't penetrating due to the compact nature of the topsoil. Plus it is a slight downhill...
Mulch, SuperSneak, mulch! Mow the lawn with a collector-mower and cover all the flower beds with what there is in the collector. Or, get a bale of straw, or woodchips of leaf trees (woodchips of conifers are acid). Four inches or 10-15 cm layer of mulch should do the trick. First it doesn't look so lovely, but after the flowers start to bloom they cover the mulch. Or your eye gets used to mulch.

    • Thanks....ok....replant (divide) lillies....mulch/gypsom and break up tough ground.
Sounds good...I have some things to do.

Well that's part of it too - its probably the best guide to what will grow well in my opinion.

We have a bush down here with blue brush style flowers which does very well for some reason but I don't see much anywhere else. Roses thrive but azaleas and camelias and the like are a complete waste to time unless you find a very favourable sheltered spot with the right soil for them. Its a damn claypan down here.

          I can do that.
Now to think up suitable synonyms to give the plant nursery people (with whom I'm on first name terms ) while I'm detailing my next aquisition...

But you disappear for extended periods, Hydey. I just maintain things for you. Trim the edges, spread some chooksh*t around, that sort of thing.

Phew! Hydey's disappeared again for Lord knows how long. How old's the plant, Sneak? Has it - as it were - multiplied within the pot?

Too true - he seems to have come online last night for the sole purpose of answering his gardening questions.

Of course he vanished by the time makeo and I were ready for the next session of the 3 way

But of course. His modesty is so transparent.

Très sensible, I'd've thought. Bit like turning up willingly at the appointed time for your own execution.

Please don't use lawn clippings as mulch, they contain grass seeds and you end up with lawn in the garden beds, place the lawn clippings in the compost and when the compost is ready put that on your garden, better still buy a mulching mower and feed your lawn while you mow.
