Carl Lewis should get honourable mention. Dominant in dash and especially the long jump for a long time, copied Jesse Owens' four 1936 Olympic Golds in 1984, plus he was a clean athlete and a fair player who could serve as a role model for aspiring young athletes.

Other contestants: Pele (actually awarded Greatest Sportsman of the 20th Century, can't remember by whom), Paavo Nurmi (totally dominant in long distance running in his time) and Martina Navratilova (already mentioned).

      All good choices there Winston

Carl Lewis was a wonderful athlete.

I wonder how Navratilova's record compares with others...

          There are several possibilities...

          Paavo Nurmi (running)
          Pele (football)
          Sergey Bubka (pole-vault)
          Carl Lewis (running)
          Mark Spitz (swimming)
          Nadja Comanescki (gymnastic)
          .... the list is endless...

It's very difficult to narrow it down to one but I'd go to Nick Galis (most of you probably don't know him) because of the impact he had on the game of Basketball in Greece on and off the field.

Are you seriously telling me you haven't heard any negative Bradman stories?

Here's one for you. A film maker did a positively worshipful telemovie on the Don's life. Bradman cooperated with the production. In one scene Bradman is shown with a glass of beer in his hand. Bradman was furious and never spoke to the filmmaker again - he just sent him a rude letter, which he often did when people offended him in the slightest way.

              That's your heroe for you

Michael Schumacher is not a good sportsman. In fact, he's one of the worst sportsmen there is.

Granted, he's good at his sport, but that alone doesn't make him a contestant for greatest sportsman. He'd have to be a little less of a cheat and double crossing bastard to have that label attached.

Not a role model for anybody.

You and I are agreeing a lot today

Perhaps the worst Schumacher incident was when he deliberately crashed into another driver to stop him winning the World Drivers Championship in the last race of the season. What an arsehole.

I 100% agree. The guy is a total *******, and he got what he deserved back in 97 when trying to punt my man Jaques off the track in that finale.

But guys.... the man learned to go-kart in the rain flawlessly when he was three years old. He is a bloody good (although not honorable) sportsman.

Then again... if I ever find out Ferrari did use traction control back when it was illegal (which they very well could of), the bastard loses all credibility.

                            I agree on Gretsky.
                            M.J. too should be mentioned.
In a (rare) patriotic moment I'd mention also Lorenzo Bernardi, best volley player of the century.
