      • and Roland, how good is your source?

Are you sure it was not the 13th?

(how can we be sure of the exact date of a "fall" of such a big city BTW)

        • Istanbul was very small and poor at that time. It only came to a 2nd richness in Turkish culture.

          • hmm like germany losing half its territories.

it didnt really get as rich as it was in the easter roman empire though. (which was the envy of Rome for a long time)

                • Constantinople is not so hard to spell.

                  Konstantinoupolis.

                  Or simply Polis.

                  (the city of constantine)

                  • Constantinople had about 50.000 or so people when the Turks conquered it. It went fairly quickly after the Turks made a breakthorugh - they had numeric superiority of 10:1-20:1.

Why is the date so important ?

                    • Well, Roland, it did come as a decided shock to the rest of Europe and helped formulate a European coalition against the Turks that would culminate with the turning back of the seige at Vienna and then the gradual diminution of Turk holdings in the Balkans. Some see it as the turning point whereby Europe began its ascendancy, as it jolted them so much.

                      • Roland,

                        it is important yes.

Because I'm sure it fell on a Tuesday.

Greeks consider Tuesday the 13th the "bad day" instead of the rest of europe which i think considers Friday the 13th the "bad day".

                        Superstisiously speaking of course.

                          • I meant the exact day, not the event.

Btw, what european coalition ? Most of the time we fought the Turks, we fought the french too.

                            • That's just American oversimplification

And most of the times you fought the French, we fought each other

Maybe the latin conquest in 1203 or 1204 ?
