It is for the good of the nation. I had a little manifesto kicking about somewhere, but I can't be bothered finding it.

That's what authoritarians always say.Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

What about the Chinese limiting families to one child "for the good of the country" hard to argue against that one.Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth

By literal dictionary definition, taking from someone in order to give to someone deserving isn't selfish. Keeping everything for oneself is.
Also, Bods, if you think we shouldn't help people even when they need it, I hope you're looking forward to a lovely dotage. Of course, giving you help just because you're old and infirm would be selfish, right?
Hope you have a nice life, Bods. Because you won't the way you're going."Love the earth and sun and animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown . . . reexamine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency" - Walt Whitman

What? So those on the left are all claiming benefits from the state? Most left-wingers are pro-giving some of their earnings to help those unfortunate. How is that selfish?
And I think Boddingtons submits letters to this site seriouslywww.dailynail.co.uk

Wrong. See, the left always twists the principles that the right expounds (though often doesn't understand itself). Help, charity, giving is incredibly important. We can't (or shouldn't) expect everyone to just struggle on themselves in despiration thinking that natural selection is at work. It is a terrible outlook for humanity.
It is essential for people to help out their brother when he is in a tough situation.
Now, these are principles that the right, the left and libertarians all support. How the left differs is that the left feels people aren't giving enough, or to the right people, or in the right ways, so it feels the need to FORCE people to 'give' how the left tells them.
No matter how much someone needs assistance, his fellow man should not be FORCED to help. By all means he should be encouraged, but FORCE is evil and should not be allowed.
This is the difference. So to answer the poll's question, both are wings on a corrupt and dying plane. Both are selfish, both are wrong.Captain of Team Apolyton - ISDG 2012
