The fact is that black people prefer to watch other black people on TV, and white people prefer to watch other white people. Most of the top shows among black audiences are shows featuring blacks, and vice versa for whites.

Theres nothing racist about a black entertainment channel IMO, they are just catering to a specific audience.

What makes you think that?! That is a very ignorant comment. Do you think when a black person and a person of another race mix that the offspring is black?! If all the races in the US mixed to a point where everyone was the same color, I can assure you they would not be black. More like a light brown.

As usual, you have no clue what you are talking about.

In addition to BET, Cablevision, a New York area cable TV provider, carries Telemundo (spanish language TV out of LA directed at Latinos) and PBT (Portuguese language TV).

Becuase there is no station called "White Entertainment Television" nor could there be, as it would be labeled racist, and just because some stations have a lot of shows with white characters does not mean that they are stations for the white race.

It's a cop out argument and I get sick of seeing every race related thread answered by "well whites are more powerful and everything in America is already white, so it's only fair that there be something for blacks"

UPN has a lot of "Black" shows, but it's not called a "Black Network". I like some of the programs they show. Why does BET have to call themselves that name?

They are just appealing to a specific audience. I dont see anything wrong with it.

You are right about the double standard though. No channel would dare call themselves the "white entertainment channel", its just not PC. There are channels that intentionally appeal to white audiences, but they would never admit it so bluntly.

Is it racist to specify that a station is for the entertainment of a certain race?
I don't think BET specifies their programming is solely to be viewed by Black people.

Does it imply that all shows on that station are geared to a certain race?
I think it implies that the programming is geared towards a cultural group that has been traditionally neglected by mainstream television in the past.

Does it mean that all members of that race like and enjoy the types of programs seen on that station?
Do all white people like CBS? Silly question, of course it doesn't in any way imply that.

You'd never get away with White Entertainment Television.
No, but a cable network oriented towards Irish-Americans, or German-Americans, or French-Americans wouldn't be a problem, IMO. We already have Hispanic channels galore.

Spare the "everything is white entertainment television" responses, please.
There's nothing invalid about pointing out how television has, for much of its history, presented a white world-view.

Please explore the dates as to when UPN was started and when it began such programming vis-a-vis the start of BET. You'll find BET predates UPN by many, many years.

It was established to fill a niche in the television market which was, at the time, very unfilled.

Not for long. If UPN survives it will begin replacing its black shows with more and more white ones, the way FOX and the WB have.

I think Orange and Caligastia entered a pact whereby Orange would start all the race threads for a while to take heat of Cali's back.

Even though UPN is relatively new, before it existed there were independent networks that showed mostly Paramount shows like Star Trek. It was the same with the WB.
