Heh... when did the americans stop speaking english?
Seriously, my grandparents speak a dialect of English which was used by the upper class in the 1600s. It only lives on in the U.S. in a couple of clusters in mountainous areas of the south. They live in northwest Arkansas, and the other group lives in Appalachia. He's got the Midas touch.

Frosty, The MLS has a league championship. And then there is an American Cup Competition for all soccer teams in the US, from the MLS, the A-League, etc. Any pro team can try for it.“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
- John 13:34-35 (NRSV)

People, the term "Soccer" is NOT an American invention, bastardization, or anything of the sort. We didn't create it at all. Soccer is an ENGLISH word used to differentiate the game from Rugby, since both games were once known as football (Soccer Football, Rugby Football).
While most of the world commonly knows the game as merely football, there are various versions of the game including Australian Rules Football, Gaelic Football, and the gridiron football played by the NFL, among others.
So back off with you pseudo-purist nonsense about how we don't even call the game by it's proper name. We're merly being more specific than you are, because, well we more diverse in our athletic pursuits.
As for the"World Series" that title goes back to the day when a New York City newspaper or magazine, called 'The World' used to sponsor a series of baseball games between the champions of two baseball leagues. The title just stuck from there. Their are no world championships for baseball like there are for soccer, basketball, hockey, figure skating, alpine sports, and track & field, primarily because outside of Japan, the Philpines, and the Dominican Republic no one else plays baseball. Incidentally there is a youth world championship called the Little Leage World Series, which does have international competition.
PS: Funny line about the US giving a goal back to Portugal. Ouch!!!What is best in life? Crush your enemy! See him driven before you. And to hear the lamentation of his women.
