Jesus, what do you want us to say? ****ing Beethoven's ****ing ninth?

Ah, wait, you're a Prog Rock fan. They're all failed Classical Music fans anyway, that explains it.

I don't do epics. If I do long songs at all it's relatively unassuming stuff like Kraftwerk's 27-minute album version of Autobahn, nothing pompous. I'm sure people a thousand years ago liked to flow with the rhythm too...

Youre too obsessed with size, why is that?

What a thought. You pop out of mid-air 1000 AD with a blaster playing Kraftwerk

Fun Fun Fun on the autobahn....

(you've gotta have the music in your head for the full effect)

As the arrows are whizzing past your head you cry out "Lets all mellow out"

There is nothing pompous about most classical music. There is something ironically elitist, however, about people who say such things...

"Chop Suey" by System of a Down... I really like the piano at the end.
To us, it is the BEAST.

The Western Lands and Seven Souls, both by material.
Also La Noyee from the Amelie soundtrack.

My choice would probably be jazz, not pop, and probably something from Sonny Rollins' Saxophone Colossus -- either "St. Thomas" or "Moritat" (a/k/a "Mack the Knife").

But if we're talking pop, the only song I can think of that stops and makes me listen, in any mood and any situation, is the Beatles' "For No One."

And if I have to pick some piece of soaring, classical-music-wannabe rock, I must say I have a soft spot for Dire Straits' "Telegraph Road."

No question. "River Deep, Mountain High". Ike and Tina Turner (minus Ike, plus Phil Spector).
" ... and the following morning I should see the Boks wallop the Wallabies again?" - Havak

Well, if we're talking long songs, Mogwai Fear Satan is a ****ing good one. But, for the best opening I have heard to a song, Sugarcube by Yo La Tengo.

Probably "Club Paris" from Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast.

Yes, sad as it sounds, I'm quite into game music.
"Paul Hanson, you should give Gibraltar back to the Spanish" - Paiktis, dramatically over-estimating my influence in diplomatic circles.

Eyewerks - you know you want to visit. No really, you do. Go on, click me.

                                1 song?

I could think of a couple hundred that kick my arse every time.

Since it's on my mind I'll say

Ooh Child by the Five Stairsteps. Always a mood lifter.

Snappy you're obsessed with that damn freak song
