Often the outcome of an interview is just luck. As Moral Hazard pointed out, when you are selected for an interview you have the knowledge and skills for the job. The interview really is just a way to find out if (they think) you will fit in with the company. In other words, they want to know if you have the right chemistry, so to speak.

It's not nevessarily the appointee is better than you, just that the interviewer thinks he is the best fit in terms of character (mainly).

Provost - take a year off.. if you don't do it now, you never will and that will give you the perspective as to what you could really like to do for your life.

Anyway if you go and travel there are many other things to learn/experience in life other than this morbid western lifestyle
