  • Why in God's name do politicians get paid so much?

Well? I understand why we came up with the idea of paying office-holders because otherwise we'd only have wealthy people who didn't work in office, but some of these senators, etc. get paid way to much. If there are so many people in poverty in this country, why in God's name are we paying our leaders so much? I say they should reflect and live like the average American if they are to be effective leaders of a democratic nation, not wealthy elitists who are removed from the common man. Give them whatever's the average income of Americans. No more than 30,000 a year...

It might have to do with the fact that they have to give up most if not all of their privacy. The common man doesn't get media following him around all the time, it's some kind of compensation.

I don't think paying them alot will make them any smarter.

Now, I think we just have rich idiots in office instead of poor idiots.

Are you actually suggesting....that we agg another 500 or so people that make $30,000 to the DC area? Where would they live, south central?

The idea that politicians are paid too much is just ridiculous when you consider that its the job from hell and the responsibilities they have. Look at the President of the United States. He gets paid peanuts compared to your average corporate CEO.

Btw, if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys, Dubya being a case in point.

How much would you get paid if you got to vote on for your own wage?

But I'd settle for 100k per year if I could stay at home and do nothing for a job.

Well I hate defending politicians but the media and public scrutiny are major constraints on politicians salaries and conditions.

Let me put it another way - if you became a politician "for the money" you'd have to be out of your tiny mind - they earn every cent.

bah... media scrutiny? What the hell is that? Have a few cameramen taking pictures of you? Yeah that's a real big problem that deserves them getting so much money...

I agree with the statement that politicians get paid far too little. Paying politicians more encourages more common people to run for office, and make it their primary job. As it is, a political job can have so little money, that only the rich can afford to run. In this case, I'm mostly talking state and local levels, but also to some degree the federal level as well.

What about making politicians live on the "living standard" of their country, ie. they get whatever the average wage is.
