  • Tension between Canada and the U.S.?

Is tension growing between Canada and the U.S.? I don't mean between our governments or anything like that; I mean between Joe Six-Pack Molson Canadians and Joe Six-Pack Budweiser Americans.

Before the NBA playoff game between the Detroit Pistons and the Toronto Raptors tonight, the Detroit crowd booed the Canadian national anthem. Then, at the NHL playoff game between the Vancouver Canucks and the Detroit Red Wings, the Vancouverites returned the favor, booing the American national anthem.

What's going on here? Increased sense of nationalism combining with the flood of emotions over the recent tragic accident in Afghanistan? Or just some drunken yahoos on both sides of the border behaving in rather poor taste?

Just a lack of good sportsmanship, that's all.

I don't hear many Canadians (none that I've heard) blaming the USofA for the mistakes of a USAF (or ANG) pilot. We are aware that sh*t happens. We invented hockey after all.

But just in case DinoDoc is right... Put the moose on alert.

It might be my imagination, but it seems to me that the Canadian government and media have been trying to stir up some nationalism recently, and it's started to kick in the last couple of years.

we should just vassalise Canadia and then annex them (as 3 or 4 states)

There is anger in Montreal too. Agatha Dyer, the mother of Cpl. Ainsworth Dyer, struck out at the Americans. "I'm angry with the United States of America," she said. "If it wasn't for them my son would be here today."

Thousands of Canadians have been sending their thoughts to media websites, and amid the grief expressed about the tragic accident, there are also many messages from people who are angry that the soldiers were killed by their allies

Britton Cole of Kingston, Ontario wrote to the CBC website: "The level of incompetence in the mighty US armed forces is inexcusable."

"I am angry," said Marie Blosh, in front of Toronto's war memorial, where four fresh daffodils had been laid at the base.

Bush is "charging ahead like some kind of lone cowboy and expecting everyone to follow along," she said. If Canada is to continue its involvement in the war on terrorism, "there needs to be more consensus."

                        BLAME CANADA!

Seriously, I think something ugly is happening. I've noticed a trend over the nineties to make fun of Canada more and more. I think it's partly related to the fact that we're practically outlawed making fun of our usual targets of humor: Blacks, gays, Jews, women, etc. Partly I think it's good neighbored jostling that's goes on between freinds, as more and more Canadians and Americans come in contact with each other. But there's something else, because we've had several movies in which we go to war with Canada (albeit comedies).
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Of course KH, you are right that there are people who are reacting emotionally to the loss. However, I don't see any greater level of Anti-Americanism than is normal. Do you think the crowd at a hockey game was reacting to Afganistan?

They probably thought it was the Iraqi national anthem.
