What's a doctoral program? What sort of economics?

            • A doctoral degree is the PhD. My intended specialty is macroeconomics (i.e., how the economy functions as a whole). I haven't gotten any more specific than that. I'm interested in all sorts of things: business cycles, growth and development. Michigan State has areas of specialization in history of economic thought, econometrics (statistical methods to test theory), macroeconomics, public economics, international economics, development, industrial organization, labor economics, advanced theory (strategic behavior, game theory, risk and uncertainty), and environmental/resource economics. So there's plenty for me to chew on here.

              • Jules, if you're interested to blather about economics please drop by at this thread. It doesn't matter what sort of econ you want to discuss, heck, it doesn't even need to be more than vaguely related to it.

                • But I'll hijack this tread a bit acause I'm drunk again and it's 3 am.

This might interest you Jules. Western economic theory has generally accepted the concept that government has no place in the marketplace except when the marketplace fails (and even then there are those who argue that gov't still should not get involve).

Yet, governments in Asia are actively involved in the marketplace. The attitude here seems to be that if the government can make a profit by investing in the marketplace then it should do so. Instead of handing out money to businesses, gov'ts give money in exchange for shares. The benefit is that every dollar in profit earned means one less dollar that has to be taken in profit and that means one less dollar that has to be taken in taxes or from loans. The downside is the government can distort the market (whether croynism or just investing in a sector that shouldn't receive money).

The big question is whether government intervention of this sort is beneficial or detrimental to the marketplace.

Actually, the bigger question is: can we gather enough evidence or theory to answer the question.

                      • Tingkai, that's a platitude, which is fine by me as long you have the evidence to back it up. Have you?

LTEC, why start a new thread if you can convert an old one? Only being economical you know.
