I have often thought that people use a word and it is defined differently for different people

I would like to see how people define this common word

      It depends on the person.

Some bisexuals have leanings towards one preference one week, one the next week, over and over.

Others simply don't differentiate between males and females as prospective mates and are attracted equally to both. I guess the brain's just not wired to differentiate between the sexes in this case.

for such a difference shouldn't there be different words??

Sure. The people who switch from week to week aren't really bisexual, they're gay and then they're straight and then they're gay and then they're straight etc.

                other....

I've always viewed sexual preference as being on a continuum, ranging from straight to curious to 50/50 or what have you. Everyone, whether they believe it or not, falls somewhere on such a continuum.

It's a person who is attracted to both sexes on the mental, emotional, and sexual levels. Sometimes not 50/50, sometimes different amounts of attraction at different levels. The person might have a preference, one sex over the other, but still feel attraction towards both.

I think it's important to remember that the purpose of the term "bisexual," like the term "homosexual," is to give names to deviance from heterosexuality (before I get flamed: I'm not saying that's a good thing, I'm just saying that's the etymology of the terms). Not surprisingly, not a lot of emphasis has been placed of delving into the nuances of the term; since its primary purpose is to designate "deviant" people, simply calling them all "bisexual" is enough to do the job.

I'm voting "other" because, realistically, I'd imagine you'd want at least 5 other terms, corrensponding to points 2-6 on the Kinsey scale (where 1 is homosexual and 7 is heterosexual, or vice versa -- I forget which). But that would be admitting that human sexuality exists on a spectrum, and not in neat little "us" and "them" categories...and we can't have that, can we?

Reminds me of a joke I've always liked:
"NEWS BULLETIN: Scientists announced today that they have discovered a powerful new drug that, when administered in proper doses, breaks down straight men's resistance to gay sex. They're calling it 'alcohol.' "

Bisexuals are only choosing to be like that because it's currently trendy.

That last troll has always been my favourite because the last time Bisexuality was trendy was in the mid-eighties, and it hasn't really been accepted in mainstream youth culture since, ooh, the Glam Rock era c:a 1972?

To be honest, I'd go with as broad a definition as possible. If you cut out Monogamous bisexuals, bisexuals who just want sex from one of the genders, etc. you're excluding an entire group from self-definition. It bugs the hell out of me when someone who switches from a male to a female partner is described as a "Lesbian" or whatever, just because they switch the gender of their current partner. Even if it is a transitory state from straight to gay or vice versa it's still bisexuality, and the person feels it's bisexuality, so stop psychologising and let the person decide for themselves! The gay movement is just as guilty as mainstream society in constantly trying to pull self-defined Bisexuals onto one of the sides by narrowing the definition...

Interesting. You are not using a generalization in that comment? So there are no bisexuals when it isn't trendy?
