  • The US Pledge of Allegiance.

I thought God Save the Queen was outdated and over-the-top

Do kids still have to swear this every day in school?
    Concrete, Abstract, or Squoingy?

They stand up at the very least.

No, they don't have to stand up... they can refuse and keep seated.

But it's still recited (?) by the school as a whole?

They don't have to stand up, but in all my years of school, I don't remember a teacher that would really let them stay seated, or any student that did stay seated.

In my schools in California we never did the pledge.

I used to have to recite the pledge allegiance to the US flag when I was at school.

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America
and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

              Wow, I still remember it.

My daughter never had to in her schools - nobody she knows (in Cali or in other states) have either.

I remember doing it in Texas as a kid, way back, but even in a lot of schools I went to (30 years ago give or take) we never bothered with it.

I remember doing it in my younger days, but I can't remember a single time after 4th grade or so.

Interestingly, "under God" was thrown into the Pledge during the '50s, 1954 if I remember correctly. Around the same time "In God We Trust" was put on our paper money. You know, in order to smoke out those godless commies.

It was the winning entry in a patriotic magazine contest.
