Yeah but it's easier to come over as a student. I don't know what the restrictions are but they aren't the same as for an economic immigrant. There were quite a few foriegn students when I went to university and I'll bet few of them would have done better at that test.

I can't say whether the colors of Asher's photos are touched up or not, but they are accurate. I moved to Calgary 6 months ago and was amazed at the great views. Like any place, you could take some shots that look ugly but for the most part, the view is amazing ( stops . . . turns to office window and gazes at the Rockies . . . ) simply beautiful.

overall my impression of Calgary is that of a growing thriving city that is becoming more metropolitan and sophisticated. Minority populations are growing fast as there are lots of jobs. Despite the boom, trafiic congestion is still manageable and the crime rate does not seem very high (product of available work). Like any city it has its homeless and strip of strung out hookers and a few less preosperous parts but those are minor compared to its good qualities ( like the bike trail system that allows one to ride to work in the downtown while having to cross zero roads)

My neighborhood isn't under construction, so there's little to no dirt to be flying around here to make it very dusty.

Another thing is the public transportation system here. The city is relatively new, and was mostly designed around the system. Works really well for me, as I don't have a car.
Busses are almost always on time, the trains are all functioning, and the busses and trains are very well maintained.

How often do the buses run? I was there many years ago and the buses on a main route ran every 20 minutes! Has the service improved?

Depends on the route and time of day.
During rushhour in the mornings they run every 5-10 minutes or so here.

During the day it's every half an hour here. They've got the phone system set up so you can call the number, punch in your stop number, and it'll tell you when the next three busses are coming and if there's any delays. The website's also interactive like that: www.calgarytransit.com

One thing great about Calgary's mass transit system is its LRT system (I don't the proper name). It's kind of like an above-ground subway.

On another note, one time I was driving out of Calagary on the Trans-Canada. Ahead of me the sky was clear and sunny. The Rockies were lit up like a bright grey wall. The land about me was low rolling hills of gold. And then I looked in the rear view mirror, and a storm was coming up, turning everything dark. It was like I was riding a wave. Had the tunes going full-blast. Life was good.

The busses are like 1/10th full even when it runs every half-hour. There are hundreds of routes, if you make them run every 10 minutes the cost is enormous.

The half-hour thing is for the bus I take (route 76: Hawkwood to Brentwood/University)

The LRT is now 100% emission-free too. All wind-powered.
