  • Slavery Reparations

Yes I'm still watching Fox news for some stupid reason. I have to get my O'Reilly factor in. This guy is a major a$$hole. I like him.

%55 percent of african-americans support this idea. I can't blame them. Who is going to say no to a pay check.

And I know we've had this thread before.

I would like to address a different angle. Chase Manhatten is being sued for profiting off slavery in the 19th Century. Should they be sued?

I actually support sueing them because they turned me down for a home loan. But 3 months later they bought the loan from the bank that did approve my loan. . Sue their asses.

That depends. Have they found any 19th century slaves to file the suit?

We all know slavery reparations are a joke, and no, Chase shouldnt be sued. When a generation passes its too late.

yeah I think that is a good requirement. It has to be within one generation.

                Case Closed!

But I'll leave this for someone to pick up. It's like a gun debate. I'm sure someone will pick it up and run with it.

                    Absolutely not

I mean seriously now, how far back do we go? Are lawyers going to become a part of our everyday life??

I support slavery reparations, but I have to do more reading on the current developments before I can elaborate an argument.

Basically, slavery prevented blacks from accumulating the same kind of wealth and assets that whites have been able to accumulate through anscestors and descendants. When the Great Depression hit, for instance, it was worse for many blacks than whites, simply because blacks had little or not collective assets to help local black communities.

Plus, blacks were given equal citizenship rights in the 1860s and 1870s, but then there were loophole amendments passed that systematically denied blacks citizenship rights that were granted to them at that time. This further prevented blacks from an equal opportunity to accumulate wealth and assets to help them through the recessions and depressions.

damn, that a weak arguement fun.

Because a race as a whole was deprived years ago, means descendants must pay? Thats BS to me.......Your facts on the depression are probably true. But warrant looking into.

And as a note, I think the "Wealth" accumalition thing is off base a bit. Generally the only thing you would inherit back then in the 1800's was a herd of cattle. heh........

or 40 acres and a mule

I say the best way to counteract the economic difference is through urban education funding...where most african americans, as well as other minorities, live. However, I am strongly against Affirmative Action and other economic hand out programs based on race.

It depends. You can't just sweep some dirt under a rug and forget about serious wrongs in the past. Cases like these are very complicated with no easy answers.

There is a problem with this "one generation" requirement. What if the courts drag their collective feet long enough so that no survivors are left? Can a nation wash its hand of some bloody deed that way? Has justice been served?

I am saying this because there are a number of cases going on in Japan with foreign civilians suing the Japanese government for damages wrought in WWII. The plaintiffs are very old at this point, as a matter of fact the cases are now dragging on for years, and some plaintiffs have died already.

Closely linked is the "head tax" charged against the Chinese by New Zealand, Canada, US and other countries in the late 19th to early 20th century. Can they just shrug their shoulders since there clearly are victims?

On the other hand, it's difficult to say how far back should one go. Can the Saxons charge the Normans for invading England, for example?

Faded, one of the ways in which to accumulate wealth over the generations from the late 1700's through the 19th century, was through owning estates and land. Whites had property rights, slaves and free blacks did not have equal property rights.

Cattle was not the only commodity. If you don't think there were other ways to accumulate wealth, you're mistaken.
