I'd argue that maneuver and mobility had a lot to do with German victories, although of course the 88 contributed as well.

Not that bad, but they were doctrinal bastards, since the HE performance of the 76 mm guns wasn't that great, and the loss of turret traverse speed affected the US doctrinal idea of tanks as used in breakthrough and exploitation, not AT warfare.

The T34 was much more mobile on Russian terrain, particularly in mud and ice. Its treads were about twice as wide comparable German tanks

          Next question

Are we talking about T-34/76s or T-34/85s here?

Sure, but mud and ice weren't a factor in the early German victories.

And case, we are probably talking about the T-34/85, although of course it was the /76 that was first used at Smolensk.

That's because when there was mud or ice the German tanks weren't going anywhere

I'm not disputing that, I'm saying that German skill in mobile warfare won them a lot of battles before the snow started falling

                              Amateurs.

When we talk about ground-pressure, the benefits of various suspension types, and track slippage, then we will have entered the heavenly realms of MBT techno-gibberish.

Yes, the T34 had nice suspension too.

(thanks to good piece of early Soviet espionage)
