Great thread. My top five of the moment:

      5. Sinead O'Connor's cover of Nirvanah's "All Apologies"
      4. k.d. lang's cover of "I Never Promised You a Rose Garden" (who did the original?)
      3. Aaron Neville's cover of Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927"
      2. Sonic Youth's cover of the Carpeters' "Superstar"

And my personal top cover of all time...
Lyle Lovett's cover of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man"

Tool - No Quarter - orig by Zeppelin
A really weird one here - Frankie goes to Hollywood doing Springsteen's "Born to Run", and it's not half bad....

Heres a cover of a cover - Metallica doing "Whiskey in the Jar"

Originally its an old irish pub song, but then Thin Lizzy made it rock then Metallica covered it. I like the Metallica version best. The Pogues play the traditional style well too.

I think Skid Row did it too.

Speaking of Metallica covers, (Bob Seger's) "Turn the Page" is also excellent.

Dreams by the Corrs, probably the best.
"Love the earth and sun and animals, despise riches, give alms to every one that asks, stand up for the stupid and crazy, devote your income and labor to others, hate tyrants, argue not concerning God, have patience and indulgence toward the people, take off your hat to nothing known or unknown . . . reexamine all you have been told at school or church or in any book, dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency" - Walt Whitman
