but I can see britain being relucatnt. even churchil though that was a matter for the «continentals» to do.

the thing is that countries like britain or denmark or ireland create too many variable geometry (eceptions in the law) clauses in th european integration process and it is slowed down considerably.

the sad part is that ultimately most countries join in to the different aspects of unification. the politicians know this all too well from the beggining. so in the end of the day the only thing that has been achieved is just the hinderance of unification.

but each country has each reasons for being or not being in the EU. is not something to be forced at. you calculate your interests and you decide.

things are easy know. the processes of creating nation like authorities are on an embryonic stage. so delinguants like britain do not cause much harm to the rest of the EU.

if however the integration process continues (as I think it will) eventually britain will have to decide for good. in or out. both choices are respectable.

I think we all know who has caused all these problems; politicians. Get rid of them, and we'll all be happy.

I've said it you before Mark, and I'll say it again.

Stop repeating this anti-US tripe you get from various places. Think about your stances on issues instead and don't let yourself get brainwashed.

the Eu and especially the european commission are very often being used as scapegoats by the national governments too. It happens in almost all the EU states and to a lesser extend in scandinavia since they have very long lasting transparency laws.

there can be an agenda to be followed by the greek government for example which is very unpopular to the public. they can lobby hard for it in the commission and the council of ministers (being utterly secure behind closed doors) and then present it to the public as a decision of the «evil commission» or whatever. whereas it was them who lobbied for it.
              it happens all the time.
(not that the EU institutions are flawless or a paramount of democratic accountability...)

Your right. It is a pitty and a shame when on group of people continue to hold grudges about being beaten and ruled by another country in the past. And then allow that hard feeling to get in the way of a postitive relationship in the present. Even though they are really close to each other, and infact border each other.

there are other european countries who have suffered much more than britain during WW2 from the germans so I don;t think that's it.

it is more of a realpolitik power game that still goes on in britain. (since it served it so well in the past)
