Is Bush's awesome increase in military spending a reasonable response to the afermath of September 11, or is he creating a force almost too powerful for its own good? Peter Beaumont and Ed Vulliamy report.

An interesting take on American military dominance.

Good point, who are they going to fight?

Increase in spending seems to be about $500 a year per person in the US, couldn't that be better spent on internal problems?

Well I would like to know what is the goal of current US administration with all that spending.

Anyway i did not expect that 40% of the military spending in the world is spent by the US

The funny thing is the next 20-25 % are spent by western europe, and another 5 % or so by Japan.

I suppose US defense contractors and military toy-boys aren't happy before they reach the 100 % mark...

60% will be good enough though. Reaching the 100% mark will require "removing" some of the competition, so to speak.

As for who we might be ready to fight? Whole lotta people in china. If they ever get mad at us, we would need to be prepared.

I am wandering who are the next nine states.

40% US next nine together spend the same as US...

I guess they are Russia, China, UK, France, Italy, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Turkey any other guesses? Iran, Japan, Taiwan, Spain, Germany come to mind?

I think that the first five are defintiley in with Turkey and India the next best.

Chinese don't have the navy to mount an amphibious assault on Taiwan. How, exactly, are they going to do anything to the US?
