Pros: You get to check out the "opposite teams" locker rooms without being on the opposite team.
Cons: You have to find a good excuse for always wearing pants in there.

Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Okay, so there's quite a few cons.

Elton John was good back in the early days.
                      George Michael was never good.

i was reading about sexual orientation today in my psychology book bvy David myers (in case anyone wants to check what i say and make sure i'm not blowin **** out my ass)....
it seems to me that even asking the question of the pros and cons of homosexuality is completely pointless since they are finding more and more evidence that homosexuality is not a choice, but a predetermined state...not any worse or better than heterosexuality. Certain cluster cells in the Brain's hypothalamus have been studied and shown that heterosexual males have larger clusters than do women or homosexual males (the book did not really discuss homosexual females). Also, straight males have a larger corpus callosum (the tissue that connects the left and right side of the brain) than do straight females and homo. males. NOw ask: is this a CAUSE of homosexuality or is it an EFFECT?
researchers are finding that it's both a cause and an effect. Basically, homosexual males have a brain anatomy like that of a woman. so what causes it to become that way? ALso found, is that homosexual males were exposes to identical hormone amounts that straight women were exposed to when there both were 2 to 5 month old fetus. BAsically, the prenatal condition of the person makes alot of difference on how the child turns out.
At this time, scientists are continuing to study genetic causes, but the book kinda hazed over that topic and just suggested that genes DID make a difference in the outcome of sexual orientation.

so, if it IS a biological effect, to a large extent, why even bother to debate.? it's pointless.

I think it's an interesting attempt at an explanation but I don't buy a lot of it. We learned about that theory in our psychology class last term.

It doesn't really explain how people can be bisexual: It assumes there's no grey area between homosexuals and heterosexuals.

I do know it's not a choice. Why anyone would choose being gay or bi is beyond me, it complicates life and ****s with you throughout your childhood. It's not very pleasant at all.

'Homosexuality' is quite natural and common amongst alot of different animals. But because of the fear and taboo of the subject, untill recently, it has never been documented very well (often purposely) so it is a relletively new study. But, strictly homosexual behaviour is (as far as I am aware) very rare if not non-existant amongst animals. All of the animals which practice homosexuality are actually bisexual, and there is no real distinction between the behaviours in their societies (they'll screw who they want to screw, regardless of sex, and none of the others will hold that against them) - a key difference between humans and animals, which is a possible reason why alot of people are strictly homosexual; because of societies intollerance they get pushed into a corner where they have no one but themselves. Infact, there would probably be less strictly heterosexual people if it where not for this intolerance, aswell.

Osweld, you are quite right about the prevalence of homosexual behavior in animals, especially mammals. In fact, the higher you go on the intelligence scale, the more common same-sex sexual interaction becomes. So much for the argument that homosexual behavior is "unnatural".

But, strictly homosexual behaviour is (as far as I am aware) very rare if not non-existant amongst animals.

Actually there are examples. For instance, among black swans, which mate for life, some males choose other males. They will even raise young together. Some bighorn sheep and American buffalo also lead exclusively homosexual lives.

For more on the general topic check the archive for my thread "The Gay Birds, The Queer Bees". I summarized many examples (killer whales, grizzly bears, dolphins, chimps, etc) from an excellent book on the topic, "Biological Exuberance".
