What, and you wouldn't feel that your country is great and your people are great when your people try to save total strangers, people they don't know? When they think not of themselves and sacrifice their lives trying to preserve others?

If you don't think that is a great thing, an honorable thing, a patriotic thing, then you are a MORON, and I will not give you any respect. Period.

Have to love the love! Those officers were extremely brave, I'm glad we have people like that in those positions.
Too bad these individuals couldn't make it out

These people were great- you must have missed the two sentences of my post where I said this. But selflessness is not necessarily an American trait, so why should you celebrate America because of their actions?!

And anyway, if we should celebrate America because of great people like that, then we should equally despise it because of people like you.

I'm an American and what those men did would make me want to celebrate what humanity is capable of, not Americans.

Is America the only country in the world that likes to point out individuals in it's country that have done good things, and try to be like them? By the same token, shouldn't we as Americans, point out the people from here that hasve done good, and say, here, these people are what make America great, if it weren't for them, we wouldn't live in such a great place.

Oh, wait, we're putting the individual above the collective, my bad

if patriotism is being proud of heroes like those, we need more patriots.

If patriotism is being proud of your country when it does bad things, we need less

What is it? Depends on the patriots. Americans are hopefully (and I think probably) more of the first kind.
                          I refute it thus!

We celebrate them because we've never been faced with this before. What ticks me off is when we're patriotic just so that we can wave our flag and say that we're better. That's not why I do it. I do it because I see that my fellow man will help if my life is in danger. It just happens to focus on the U.S. because it was an attack on the U.S.

Um, they were police officers. They do it all the time, and have done it before. People just didn't notice because it didn't happen during such a notable event.

But it comes across as: Those are heroes because they are Americans. Why else would you be nationally proud about it ? Included that officers in other countries are less worth.

You may not mean it that way, but the connection between officers who risk or give their life to save others and nationalism is just insane.
