Are you sure that it was the US's refusal to ratify the abusive terms of the Treaty of Versailles that caused WWII as opposed to European pacifism in the face of Germany's rearmament?

Honestly, I've never quite understood the paranoia people have re: the UN. I can understand disliking it, for a variety of reasons, but some of these militia nuts focus on the UN as the root of all evil.

What is up with these UNHCR advertisements on Apolyton? The United Nations is a corrupt organization bent on pressing leftist and anti-American ideologies on innocent people.
Why, then, are you supporting them?
A couple of facts:
1. As Mark or Dan will say when they read this thread, Apolyton isn't responcible for the content of the ads that pop up - they're handled by Gamestats.
2. UNHCR are paying the cost of the ads i.e. they're actually supporting Apolyton (or Gamestats, or whoever)
Also, what's your problem with UNHCR? They're generally considered to be the best and most useful part of the UN, and save literally millions of lives each year.

The USA helped create the League of Nations. Then, just as the LON came to fruition, it decided it didn't want to play after all, and took it's ball home with it in a sulk.
I still don't get why some of you hate it so much. It just seems... irrational. And David, your last comment didn't do much to change my opinion...

So you're saying Hitler didn't come to power because of massive discontentment and resentment on the part of the German people, due to an extremely one-sided and unfair "peace" agreement?
And you're further saying that US involvement in the LoN would have changed anything??? How so?
Don't put words in my mouth... I certainly think the USA being a member of the LON would have altered the war, not necessarily in Europe, but quite possibly in Japan - the fact that the USA was not a member of the LON allowed Japan to skip out of the organisation without anyone raising so much as an eyebrow.
But anyway, I'll bite that it wasn't a particularly convincing argument... it wasn't meant to be. But then, neither is "I just hate it"...
I'm still looking for some solid reasoning for your position wrt the UN.

Yes - I am. Resentment of Versailles did play a role but actually the real problem was many Germans did not believe the war had been a decisive defeat, mainly because most of Germany was not occuppied after war and Germany's armies returned intact and victorious in the East. Many soldiers believed they had been stabbed in the back on the home front - hence the rise of extreme right wing movements like nazism which were fiercely anti communist and anti-semitic, and sought to restore Germany's greatness. That's where Versailles came in - it was seen as humiliating.
World War II was really a continuation of World War I by Germany in pursuit of a decisive result i.e. hegemony in Europe or defeat. They got defeat.
Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. Tis the rising of the moon..

I know lots of Americans who feel the same way about Vietnam - i.e. that the US military was winning, only to have an unholy alliance of the media, 'liberals' and hippies snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Let's hope that they don't go too crazy (the MIA guys I saw in Washington DC a couple of years ago looked as mad as hatters)

The "war guilt" clause in the Treaty was another huge factor. This lead to the war reparations from Germany to France, Britain, and the United States. In turn, repaying Anglo-American wartime aid, France paid Britain and America. Also in turn, repaying American aid, Britain paid much money to America. To help keep the new Weimar Republic in Germany stable, America loaned millions of dollars to Germany to help it pay the war reparations....
When the stock market crashed, American foreign policy withdrew into its turtle shell of isolationism, and the US government cut off the loans to Germany. This caused such insane inflation, and led to the worldwide Great Depression, that it would take more then four billion marks to purchase one US dollar. This is when Hitler followed the Nazi party to power, and took over himself (he was merely a secretary, and saw an oppurtunity for 'glory').
