The best part: US and British special forces have contact to many of the Afghan leaders after having worked with them. ANd presumably many of them are gratefull to the US.

No, that was your suggestion I think. You might recall I didn't accept it because I predicted the T would do exactly what they are doing now, i.e. head for the hills.

I recall April 7 as your day of shame.

              April 7, April 1, it don't matter.

Yeah, the Taleban are headed to their little bunkers and caves, with half the friggin' planet earth after their ragtag asses.

Freeze, starve, or get buried alive, great choices, huh?

Only trouble is we may not know which one of those soon-to-be-systematically blown out caves bin's ass is buried in.

Nah - most of em will just bury the weapons and melt back into the population - either in Southern Afghanistan or Pakistan. Then they'll come out to play at a time of their own choosing.

                    Hopefully.

I really hope so - we want no more WTC's.

                      [quote]

But White House officials stressed the war against terrorism could last for years despite the rapid gains recently by anti-Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said the Bush administration does not know when the al Qaeda network will be broken up and its members brought to justice.

"The president still believes patience is required," Fleischer said. "Just because Kabul has fallen is no guarantee that al Qaeda will be captured shortly. This may still last years until we find the people responsible for the attacks on the country."

Fleischer said the fall of Kabul does not carry the strategic or military importance that the fall of a nation's capital would have had in previous wars. Taliban troops withdrew from the Afghan capital Tuesday.

I just had an evil thought - what's the bet Pakistan starts using some of em in Kashmir?

*leans back in chair, gives out a cocky sigh*

Your's truly has been predicting the rapid collapse of the House of Cards since Day 1. They were so overrated and still are.

The North and east will be under complete control very soon, it's just a matter of mopping up.

The true test will be in the south.

What is going to happen to the level of troop strength now that many of the NA have to stay behind as an occupying and mop up force?

Clearly getting a couple of more Tally commanders to defect will do the job. The noman's land between the north and south is pretty vast.

However, I don't think US/UK air and special forces have been doing too much softening up in the south at all, if I remember correctly? Most of the work down there so far has been with special forces trying to group up an opposition force, which does not exist YET in the south. When the jets turn to concentrate on that area, oh my, they are really going to get theirs.

But really, by early-mid 2002, the Taliban will be destroyed. The question then will be, WHO THE F*CK IS NEXT?!?!

However, we really HAVE to stay behind and rebuild the country. Not only is it the right thing to do, it's the best strategic and diplomatic thing that could be done.

The key to rebuilding Afghanistan's economy is to work out a regional agreement that lets them have access, probably by rail, to one of the neighboring country's ports. That is imperative and vital to the whole thing.

A couple of highways and some rail lines, an oil pipeline, some modern mining equipment, those things will help them make a glorius comeback.

But the backbone of the taleban was the foreign volunteers, who are hated by the afghans and who can't melt in.

                                Guys,

It appears the Taliban are falling even faster than expected by anybody.

I am guessing Bin Laden is in Jalabad. It would make sense, as it is right next to Kashmir, which might make a nice escape route...

The rebels there let the Taliban go WITH THEIR WEAPONS. Not only that, the rebels there are Pushtuns and very friendly to the Taliban, warning the NA not to enter the area.

That's pretty smart, seeing as how Kashmir is a very hot area, it's gonna take some political smarts for any force to go in there...
