I'd agree, but note I was talking about William, not Harry.

In any case I dont think the Scandinavian monarchs are hounded like the UK royals. Perhaps cause they havent spent several decades pursuing the press? With gross extravaganzas like Charles and Di's wedding? Perhaps cause they arent trying to justify a civil list on the scale of the UK royals.
Can't argue, but wrt William, I don't see why he should be punished for the sins of his family. Neither should Harry, who has studiously loathed the press and made it clear he wants nothing to do with them.

Like I said, I would love to see nothing more than to have both of them just kiss off the familial obligation and do what they want rather than what is expected of them.

The thing that makes my blood boil is when foreigners try to you how great the British royal family is, I just feel like screaming "You pay for the f$%kers then!"

      ..and relax.....

$60 million a year in taxpayers costs. Half of which aren't dependent on the existance of a monarchy (e.g Palace upkeeps and maintenance, head of state functions). There are further distinct incomes that ameliorate the cost, and probably cause a net inflow of cash to the country.

      Compare to:

$800 million for a new parliament building in Scotland.

I know which of those two I would complain about first..

Whens the last time a royal penned a novel to match the Harry Potter series? When, huh?

                  JK Rowling for Queen!!!

But it does show how quickly later generations forget the follies/importance of those from previoius ones.
What is even more amazing, to me, is that people can forget their own generation's follies.

My father was in WWII (British Merchant Marine). He and I were discussing Iraq recently, and he mentioned a distinct memory he has from the day Britain entered WWII. He remembers a family friend, a WWI veteran (who had been gassed, but survived), talking to a group of boys about the new war with Germany. And what does this grizzled veteran of WWI tell them? "It'll all be over for Christmas, boys!"

I was staggered by that. This is a guy who had fought in a war 25 yrs prior that was also supposed to be over for Christmas, but instead lasted 4 yrs.

Then again, the guy might have just been a fool. The other thing my father remebers him saying was that the French had the best general in the world...

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

Are you implying that Rowling is Scottish? Or just making a lateral leap of logic?

I would love to see him just outright refuse.
Until he pays back the £20,000,000 he got in Diana's will (itself drawn from the public) his arse is ours and his refusal is not an option.

well she may not be Scottish by birth, but thats where she lives, no? I mean do only native born Scots get to vote for the Scottish Parliament?

Didn't Keith Moon used to parade around in Nazi uniforms once in a while (admittedly his reasons for wearing the garb were just for the shock value)?
If at first you don't succeed, take the bloody hint and give up.

If that doesn't get Boris applying for British citizenship, nothing will

Nope, but most of those who pay for it don't get to vote.
