of course it's not meant as an insult... that's why it's considered IGNORANT. Because people don't realize they might be insulting someone.
To us, it is the BEAST.

And hey if some people want to say happy holidays, so what, good for them. Let them say that. But if they say that because of the pressure .. if they genuinely just want to say that then it's just fine..

I don't understand why at the same time santa claus is everywhere then. It's like a double standard right there. We can do what ever we want, except don't say that word, it might insult someone. Why would someone get insulted by that anyway? We say all these different cultures and religions are richness, right? So why can't Christians celebrate christmas in their way without someone getting their panties in a twist? In fact, I've never heard anyone complainign about this, except christians themselves, who want to be all PC and tolerant. We manage to be tolerant on every other celebration, int he name of rich cultures and diversity, yet not to this one? I just don't see anyone insulted by this whole sentence. It doesn't mean anything bad. If someone really is insutled by it, it's their problem of tolerance, because it's not meant to be an insult of any kind, it's wishing someone a good day on this particular day.

If some scifi dudes come and say 'happy cirius day!1' on 27th of March, I won't be insulted and who in their right minds would be?

Yes it's a question of tolerance, but we're taking it to the wrong end! It's the OTHER people that need to tolerate us a little better. I don't see anyone else giving up on their party traditions.

No it is absolutely NOT ignorant. When you say it's ignorant, it makes the one who says it some kind of insulting guy.

THis is our tradition, the christian tradition. We have the right to do it, it's not outright insultive and if some people get insulted, they need to grow the **** up and start respecting other cultures as well, because we sure hell do that. It's THEM who are ignorants, adn you're only fuelign their attitudes.

Sava, it is completely and utterly ridiculous to be insulted by something that is not meant as an insult.

The phrase "Merry Christmas" is just used as a friendly holiday greeting, just like "Happy Holidays." Now when you figure out how a friendly holiday greeting can be offensive, come and talk to me. Until then. . .

          MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!
          HAVE A DAY.
<--- Quote by Former U.S. President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt
"And there will be strange events in the skies--signs in the sun, moon, and stars. And down here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by the roaring seas and strange tides. The courage of many people will falter because of the fearful fate they see coming upon the earth, because the stability of the very heavens will be broken up. Then everyone will see the Son of Man arrive on the clouds with power and great glory. So when all these things begin to happen, stand straight and look up, for your salvation is near!" --Luke 21:25-28
For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the call of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, all the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air and remain with him forever. --1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

I think the whole point of understanding other cultures and ways of life is to appreciate them and not trying to homogenise everything into one big ball of boringness. LIke I said, it goes all ways, the tolerance thing. And becacuse of the context of the whole thing is not a negative one, or insult, it's the others who need to learn to tolerate that. We need to tolerate others, and others need to tolerate us, the way we are and the way they are. To not tolerate us or christians in this little matter is just lkie saying screw with the others.

              Homogenising

              That's something Hitler wanted!

This would be the ideal way of doing it IMO, that if I meet, for example a jewish person, I would say to that person happy hanukah.. that's what I' dmost likely say, and if that person is a player, he/she would say to me merry christmas. That's appreciating the other one. Or I can say merry christmas and he/she says happy hanukah back to me. Someone wants to say happy holidays to me, I'll most likely say happy holiday back. I expect that person to be self aware atheist.

Whether you celebrate Saturnia, Chanukah, Christman, Xmas, Kwanzaa, Festivus, or something else, this holiday season is a time to remember that humanity is all one family.

Happy holidays and best wishes to all, regardless of what you celebrate.

And some people need to relax a bit, I am Jewish and don't have a problem with saying or hearing Happy Christmas, and I don't see why anyone should.

Okay. Happy holidays. Seeing that someone deleted my last message. I can't say Merry christmas since I'm atheist.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)
