I know that's a grave step, but would any of you be willing to give up your marriage (or chance to be married) because your president felt that preventing your marriage was "essential for a decent society"?

The polygamists just moved to Utah... But he isn't calling homosexuals indecent, his belief, and that of many, is that once you expand marriage to include any two or more people, it diminishes the importance of marriage and they cite Denmark (I think) as proof. They have a valid point at first look and I haven't looked beyond that since it ain't my business who you marry in the first place.

Just reduced marriages because people can get all the benefits of marriage without the commitment. It's actually an argument against the trend toward civil unions but applies to marriage. It's akin to the rationale opponents of no-fault divorce offered, make it easy for people to divorce and there will be more divorce and marriage will suffer.

If I'm reading your post right, this is the rationale behind Bush & Co. for their opposition to gay marriage? It sounds like a reason FOR it to me, in that a civil union isn't as beneficial to the couple as marriage would be (reduces commitment) and thus confers the standards of 2nd-class citizenship.

I don't see how the example of Denmark applies, as gay people are not seeking a form of marriage with less commitment -- especially those of us who are not interested in any kind of "separate but equal" civil union.

It needs two thirds support in both the Senate and the House, unless theres a movement to add it from the states, in which case we could potentially see a Constitutional Convention. If a CC looks close to happening, expect the Congress to pass an amendment to stop that from happening.

Doesn't the gay agenda have a leader who does a little bit of strategic thinking once in a while? If they hadn't tried to overturn the majority and go through the courts in Massachusetts, they would have gotten civil unions now and probably marriage sometime in the future without much fanfare.
